TRURO - Mathew and Maria Aldred are the first artists to have their works on display at the MacLellan & Moffat Financial Art Gallery for 2014.

The husband and wife artists will have their exhibition ‘The Sea' open for viewing for the month of January at the gallery housed at the Marigold Cultural Centre.

The paintings are based on the couple's experiences living close to the sea in England, France, Ireland and Canada, including Shinimicas, where they currently reside.

The couple experimented with alternative ways to capture the fluidity and luminosity of the sea and the sky, which culminated in a new mixed media technique they call fluid-foil.

The subject is first stylized into a series of shapes, which are then translated into an image embossed onto the canvas using aluminum foil, copper leaf, gold leaf and so on. The shapes are then filled with iridescent fluid acrylics and inks, which are manipulated to create the required textures, lines, and colours.

The final result is a stylized mirror on nature.

Mathew is an art and design teacher at Oxford Regional Education Centre, and Maria keeps bees and makes beeswax-related products.

An opening reception will be held Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
