BIBLE HILL - An outdated sewer pumping station will be replaced next summer in Bible Hill after a small number of voters approved borrowing the village's share of the bill.
The village held a voters meeting on Monday where 14 of the 15 people present voted to borrow up to $750,000.
Chairwoman Sharon McLean said it was critical for the project to go forward.
"We're dealing with sewer here," she said Tuesday. "At some point the pumping station would malfunction ... and we would have sewer coming up the toilets instead of down."
The project will see a 38-year-old pumping station located at the Bible Hill Recreation Park replaced. The station collects sewage from the central region of Bible Hill and pumps it to the sewer line at the top of College Road near Vimy Road.
A consulting firm has said
the station is outdated and needed expensive repairs to continue operating. A 150 mm sewage force main is operating at capacity and cannot service future development.
The project's total cost is $1.876 million with the federal and provincial governments each contributing $551,620 through the infrastructure stimulus fund.
The village is expecting to take out a 10-year debenture issue with the Nova Scotia Municipal Finance Corporation. With interest payments the village will
end up paying $896,700 for the project.
The project will be done during the same construction season as phase four of its water expansion project.
The $1.664-million water expansion will see the system expanded on East Court Road, Hazel Drive and Pictou Road from East Court Road to Wright Avenue.
The village is paying $461,601 from its general operating revenue for the year while the Municipality of Colchester County is matching the village's share. The federal and provincial governments are combining to fund $720,800 through the Building Canada Fund.
