TRURO - An event raising awareness on mental health issues in Truro was long overdue, according to some participants.
"It's very important because everybody needs to be educated to be healthy," said Great Village's Tanya Lewis, who attended Wine, Women and Wellness Thursday night. The event was hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association to educate people on mental health illnesses and offer women a way to share their experiences.
"... learning more helps people to have more positive relationships," said Lewis, one of about 200 there.
One in four people are affected with some type of mental health illness or have dealt with it in some manner.
"It's hard to know where to start looking for help and it's a very important (subject) that nobody wants to talk about," added Bible Hill's Evelyn Whidden.
Ann Black travelled from Marshville, Pictou County, to attend the Truro event.
"It's great because you can identify with other women ... and realize you are not alone," she said.

That's a step in the right direction. Events like this are really needed. The next step will be to have a similar type event for men to attend as well.

Kudos for both those who organized this event and those who attented. It's great to see that issue around mental health and mental heath awareness are becoming more public topics that are open for discussions and learnings.

As the comment says above, it would be great to have such an event that men and/or couples could attend somewhere in the Truro area.

Y'know what? Maybe I'm being too sensitive but men suffer from mental illness too eh?
