TRURO - Jana Miller didn't realize she was even being considered for a prestigious award. Imagine her surprise when she actually won it.
Miller is the recipient of the Nova Scotia Talent Trust's $1,500 Portia White Award. The honour is given to a student studying music.
"It's very surprising and great. I can't say how much I appreciate it," said Miller, 23, a former Truro resident who is studying voice performance at McGill University in Montreal.
"It's a very competitive field; there are lots of sopranos. It's so nice to know people are backing you and your home province by supporting you."
Miller was the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship for her studies through the Nova Scotia Talent Trust early in 2009, and as a result, was automatically eligible for this award.
"I didn't even know I was in the running ... it's an honour to be presented with the award because it's connected to Portia White," said Miller. "Portia White was one of the first black singers to have a singing career and she was from Truro."
Miller will use the $1,500 for tuition,
living costs and a summer opera program application.
Miller said her father, John, would pick up the award on her behalf Wednesday. Seven recipients, including Miller, were being honoured during a ceremony at Dalhousie Art Gallery but she could not attend because she's still in Montreal.
As for when her hometown of Truro will see her again, Miller will be home for Christmas to visit family and friends. She intends on performing in Truro in the spring, as she has done for the previous two years.
Miller offered some advice for aspiring musicians: be prepared for hard work and lifelong dedication.
"If you get into this career be sure you love it because it's a lifestyle and a career and you have to love it."
