WINNIPEG - A woman who was approached by a shotgun-wielding carjacker on her way home from Girl Guides earned her "Foil the Fool" badge by informing the stick-impaired thief her car has a standard transmission.
Dawn, 39, who doesn't want her last name used, says she stayed calm because her seven and 12-year-old daughters were still in the vehicle when the thief shoved his gun into her face.
When he told her to hand over her keys, she did after telling her daughters to get out and stand on the sidewalk. Then she calmly asked him if he could drive a standard.
Surprisingly, the man, whose driving abilities were apparently restricted to automatic transmissions, tossed the keys back, apologized and ran down a back lane.
"He said, `I'm sorry for doing this to you,' and he told me not to call the police," she said. "I was giving him whatever he wanted. My priority was for my children. It wasn't spunk. It wasn't bravado."
She said she simply realized that if the man couldn't drive a standard, he might grow frustrated once he tried to take off with the car, so she thought it best to warn him.
The special education teacher said she is not angry with the man or his accomplice because she doesn't know their backgrounds.
"There's that level of empathy that I wasn't personal," she said. "At the same time, safety is important, too."
Police say there was another attempted carjacking about 20 minutes later, but that one was also unsuccessful.
Police are looking for two suspects, one about 16 to 18 years old and the other 25 to 27 years old.

Hey special one, look at the date, and look when she owned up to it. Nearly 6 years later. SO TAKE THAT CAPS LOCK KEY AND SHOVE IT. Or just stop yelling.
