FREDERICTON - New Brunswick's Health Department plans to develop a provincewide colorectal-cancer screening program.
Health Minister Mary Schryer will make the announcement today in Fredericton at a gathering of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.
Schryer says the screening program is a critical weapon in the fight against the disease, which is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in New Brunswick.
It is estimated 540 New Brunswickers will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2009.
The minister says the new program will be implemented over the next three fiscal years, at a cost of $3 million per year.
She says scientific evidence shows that deaths from colorectal cancer can be reduced by close to 20 per cent with regular testing of people between the ages of 50 to 74.
