Women's Resources, By Michaela MacLachlan

Sexual Assault Awareness Month marked by film screenings, fundraisers

The sun is out, the birds are chirping in the trees and the snow is melting! Spring has finally sprung and we have a packed calendar of events here at the Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre (CNWRC).

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and we have many events and activities on our calendar to promote awareness.

Our third presentation of “The Vagina Monologues” was held on Apr. 5 and was once again a great success due to all who supported us by volunteering, attending and sponsoring the show.  We also had a presentation at the centre by Margaret Maugher of the Colchester Sexual Assault Centre on Apr. 10.

Further events in support of SAAM include a film screening at the Marigold Cultural Centre on Apr. 26 at 7:30 p.m. The documentary “Buying Sex” explores the state of prostitution laws in Canada. Admission is free and donations are accepted so please join us and take part in the discussion afterwards.

This month we will also be hosting the first film screening in our latest venture, Reel Issues, a workshop in which a different film will be shown each month. In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, this month’s documentary, “Brave Miss World” looks at one pageant contestant’s experience with sexual assault and documents her efforts to empower other women like her all over the world. Join us on Apr. 29 at 6 p.m. at the CNWRC (676 Prince Street) to watch the film and take part in the discussion.

OK ladies, if you’re looking for something fun, fresh and exciting for spring then these next two events are ones you will not want to miss. I know I won’t!

On May 9 you will definitely want to check out the Spring Fashion Show presented by Elegant Steps, with proceeds going to the Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre, held at the Railyard Pub (72 Inglis Place). Tickets are $25 and available at Elegant Steps. Admission also covers a meal of chicken spinach salad with garlic bread, dessert and tea or coffee. There will also be door prizes. The first show was held on Apr. 11 and was a ton of fun, so don’t miss out on the second show.

And keeping inline with fresh looks for spring, CNWRC will be hosting the fabulous fashionistas of Beck & Boosh Jewelry and Styles on May 22 at 6 p.m. These girls are everywhere these days, including most recently the red carpet at the East Coast Music Awards, as well as hooking up with East Coast Lifestyle to sell their nautical earrings.

I’m so very excited they agreed to be here with us for an evening to let us in on their journey to success. As women in business, I believe their story has the power to inspire so many of us who have dreams of our own. So grab a girlfriend (or two) and come join us for a great presentation as well as some insider tips for accessorizing this spring’s wardrobe.

Call 902-895-4295 or email me at cnwrc@eastlink.ca for more information or to register for any of these free events.
