Brookfield Notes, By Judy Matheson

Seniors’ home offers right mix of care, comfort

Sweet Treats Bingo will be held at Elk Court on Feb. 15 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. All are welcome to this fundraising event.

Bingo cards can be purchased at the door or in advance for $5 per card. Call Recreation Coordinator Jannis Sanford for advance tickets at (902) 650-3303.

Proceeds will be used for the recreational programs for the clients, such as bus fees for outings, special music events, and celebrations.

The winners of each game can choose their prize from the following list: a pie, a cake, or a pan of home made sweets from the display table.

Hope to see you there at 91 Carter Rd. in Brookfield.

Grace Campbell, at 97 years, is the only surviving member of the 13 Campbell siblings raised on the Willow Bend Farm in Stewiacke East. For the past seven years she has made her home at the Brentwood Ponds Seniors’ Home, where she has become part of the family along with owners Sheila Archibald, Chuck Stone and the other residents and care workers.

Campbell, being the eldest resident with the most years in (and perhaps due to her cheerful nature), is fondly spoken of, cared for and loved.

Brentwood Ponds is conveniently located in Brentwood, south of Brookfield by one kilometre, on Highway 2. The building sits on a large, well-groomed property, well off the highway — thus providing a quiet residence. The natural beauty and natural setting enjoys wildlife year round, with deer, squirrels, ducks and birds always nearby. The many windows allow for watching the animals as well as the beautiful sunsets.

The ample hallways, as well as the large property, offer the opportunity for safe walking.

The dog Mickey and a well-loved cat add to the family atmosphere to the delight of residents and visitors.

The home is 180 feet in length, all on the ground floor, accessible for all, with numerous entrance and exit doors.

There’s a capacity for nine residents, with mostly private rooms and two double rooms with en suites. The meals are shared in a spacious dining room with all the residents and family welcome, allowing for relaxing conversations and reminiscing.

The owners, Archibald and Stone, live onsite and 24-hour care is provided. Full-time caregiver Donna loves working with the seniors, and her TLC is always evident. One part-time staff worker is employed as well, and volunteers lend a hand when they can.

Although the home and seniors aren’t subsidized by the government, the rates are reasonable and include: furnished or unfurnished rooms, all meals, personal care, administration of medications, VON calls and a doctor on call. Palliative care is offered, as is respite care.

Lots of special events are celebrated, such as birthdays, holidays, and an impressive Christmas party, which includes all family and friends. Visitors are welcomed in the formal living room, the den with a large screen TV, in the kitchen sitting area or in the private rooms.

Outings are occasionally taken and talented locals provide entertainment.

The homey atmosphere, cleanliness, care and the beautiful setting is a comfort to those living at The Ponds as well as to their families. It is a blessing to have a facility of this calibre in the South Colchester area.
