Brookfield notebook, Judy Matheson

The fun fair held at Brookfield Elementary School on Saturday, Oct. 5 was a successful and fun time for all ages.

The home and school organizing committee of Pam Sullivan, Kari Furmidge, Angela Leedham, Amanda Cornelius, Lisa Gates and Cindy Joe did an amazing job. Many innovative ideas were in place and supported by family, friends and sponsors. There were activities suited for everyone: a large number of cakes were enjoyed by cake walk winners, faces painters were being creative, the dime auction offered impressive gifts for participants and several other booths encircled the gym and hallways.

As well, the South Colchester Academy Wolves, the junior girls’ volleyball team, were volunteering at several stations and Scotiabank sent two cheerful volunteers to assist as well as many mums and dads who worked in several areas. The pumpkin truck reminded everyone that fall has arrived, and the brilliant colours on the sunny Saturday morning made for a joyful fundraiser.

The elementary school encompasses children from Middle Stewiacke, Brentwood, Pleasant Valley and Brookfield. The funds raised will help the home and school provide the ‘extras’ to add to the educational experiences of the students.

Some dates to look forward to in the community:

- A turkey supper at Knox United Church on Saturday, Oct. 26.

- The UCW fall bazaar and luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Knox United Church.

- Reserve Nov. 29 and 30 for the 17 annual Christmas tour of village homes, the Forest Glen Greenhouse display of 10,000 poinsettias and the old fashioned Christmas in the train station, with supper if desired. The craft sale at the church hall will be on the same two evenings.

The Christmas gifts donated by businesses, groups and individuals, which go to the Colchester Christmas Index Program, is another important component to this festive weekend.

A curling open house at the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex is slated for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20. Instruction is offered and new curlers are welcomed. League action will start the following week. Call 673-3262 for more information.

Ice time is available for rent at the Sportsplex by calling 673-2063.
