HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's Liberal leader is calling on the province to give motorists a break at the pumps by restructuring the current gas tax formula.
Stephen McNeil says drivers could save about three cents a litre or more if the government removes what he says is a "tax on tax."
The current formula sees the province calculate the HST portion of the gas tax after it adds the provincial portion of 15.5 cents a litre to the base price of gas.
McNeil says savings will result if the HST is calculated before the provincial portion is added.
While in opposition, Premier Darrell Dexter often advocated restructuring the gas tax formula as a way of giving taxpayers a break.
McNeil says now that the NDP is in power it has the ability to follow through on the policy.

why replace revenue - why not let the government tighten their own belt for once instead of spending monety like crazy, giving the unions what they demand - and then tell us that times are tough. less revenue for the governemnet means more of my hard earned money for me to spend as i see fit - not how the government wants.

Can Steve tell us where we'll get the revenue to replace this?

Will it really matter when they increase the HST anyhow?
The NDP won't even return money owed to seniors, so what makes you think they'll cut taxes on fuel?
