MONTREAL - Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B) has received a US$137-million order for 11 three-car Contessa commuter trains from a Swedish leasing company.
The Bombardier Contessa trains will run in the Oresund region of southern Sweden and will be managed by local traffic authorities co-operating in Oresund and Trafikstyrelsen in Denmark.
The trains, which can reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h, are capable of crossing the bridge between Denmark and Sweden despite the different rail infrastructures used in both countries.
There are already 90 Contessa trains delivered and in service with various customers in Sweden and Denmark. There are another 21, including the new order, yet to be delivered.
The agreement with AB Transitio, announced Wednesday from Berlin by Bombardier Transportation, includes an option for five additional trains. The new trains will be leased by Swedish operators Lanstrafiken Kronoberg, Kalmar Lans Trafik and Hallandstrafiken.
AB Transitio is a publicly owned company that procures and manages trains for Swedish public transport authorities, primarily for regional traffic.
