TRURO - Opening for a roots artist gave Dylan Guthro a chance to take his music in another direction.

Dylan Guthro, who released his debut album just over two years ago, is set to perform on the Marigold Cultural Centre's stage on May 30 with Mo Kenney. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.

Guthro, 23, opened for David Myles, which then led to producing a single with Classified.

"I was always a fan of hip-hop and I ended up opening for David Myles," said Guthro, the son of well-known musician Bruce Guthro, who is performing at the Marigold Cultural Centre at the end of the month with Mo Kenney. "I had a song that Classified produced, so that's allowed me to take my love for hip-hop and blend it in to what I like to do."

Before he even started school, music was a huge part of Guthro's life and he just released his debut album two years ago.

"Things have been great since releasing the album. I did some touring, and have had some time to think and do some more collaborations," he said. "I'm now starting down a different path with my music."

Growing up, Guthro said music was all around him on both sides of his family. His parents bought him a guitar before he started school.

"And I've been at it ever since," he said. "I love it all, except for the long travels. I've been doing a bit of producing as well, but I love how it keeps the musical mind fresh."

Guthro met Kenney a few years ago in Ingonish at the Gordie Sampson Songcamp.

"Mo and I have definitely written a couple of songs together. We haven't recorded together yet, but I don't see why we wouldn't," he said. "I think I have the right song for her, and I might have her sing it on my next album."

The young musician has performed a number of times in Truro - with his father and as part of a songwriters' circle with Charlie A'Court.

"It should be a great night. I'm really looking forward to coming back to Truro and the show."

Tickets for the performance are $25.50 and are available at the Marigold box office on Prince Street or online at Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
