NEW GLASGOW - Lennie Gallant will be lending his voice and local star power to help some elementary aged students get experience and funds they need for more musical instruments.
On May 8, the students of Frank H. MacDonald Elementary School will be holding a concert with Gallant at the Nova Scotia Community College. Also singing with the Maritime musician will be students from A.G. Baillie.
The event is being organized by music teacher Margie Weir, who approached Gallant and asked if he’d be willing. He said yes and for the past few months the students have been learning his music.
‚ÄúBeing a music teacher here I promote a lot of East Coast music,‚ÄĚ Weir said. ‚ÄúThere are a lot of fabulous East Coast musicians around.‚ÄĚ
She said sometimes students think that culture exists somewhere out west, but she firmly believes they don’t have to travel to find talent.
‚ÄúOur culture is just rich with talent in this area,‚ÄĚ she said. ‚ÄúLennie is a phenomenal songwriter.‚ÄĚ
The students have been busy fundraising for the concert. They hope to get enough to cover the cost of putting on the show, such as lights and sound, and still have enough to purchase some new musical instruments for the class.
The students will be singing songs like She’s Called Nova Scotia by Rita McNeil and Gallant’s songs: Lifeline, Peter’s Dream and The Band’s Still Playing.
‚ÄúI‚Äôm looking forward to singing with Lennie,‚ÄĚ said Marley Burge, one of the students who will be participating in the concert.
Fellow student, Lexy Gariepy said she is also really excited to meet him.
‚ÄúI love music and I love singing,‚ÄĚ she said.
