Rita MacNeil’s niece Katriona MacNeil sings

SYDNEY — A public celebration of Rita MacNeil’s life is being planned for early next month.

The concert event, titled Home I’ll Be: Remembering Rita, is set to take place May 6 at Centre 200 in Sydney.

Lineup and ticket details are still being finalized and will be announced over the coming days. All proceeds from the event will go to a scholarship fund being set up for students in the new traditional music program at Cape Breton University.

Joella Foulds and Max MacDonald, longtime friends of Rita, are organizing the concert as a way to provide the wider community an opportunity to come together and remember Rita.

“There’s a huge part of the community that just can’t be here today and we just think it’s really important that we all come together as a community and have some laughs, and have some tears and have some tunes,” MacDonald said following Monday’s funeral.

Foulds said the concert will serve as a celebration of Rita’s life.

“She was all about community and family and songs and that’s what it’s going to be about. It’s our musical community coming together and honouring her,” she said.
