CINDY'S SNAPSHOT: A sun pillar over Port Hood

Yvonne MacDonald was at the right place at precisely the right time to capture this stunning sunset last Sunday evening. Yvonne took the photo from her deck in Port Hood NS as the sun was lowering over Port Hood Island. Yvonne says they get beautiful sunsets but she was surprised by the ray of red that was heading straight up to the amazing cloud formation. That shaft of light is called a sun or solar pillar. It’s created by the reflection of light from ice crystals. The hexagonal plate-like ice crystals fall with a horizontal orientation, gently rocking from side to side as they fall.
