With its theme of “Planet vs. Plastics,” today, Monday, April 22nd., 2024, is being celebrate as Earth Day across the nation. Earth Day is an annual event held on April 22nd., to demonstrate support for environmental protection, and since being first held on this date in 1970, it now includes a wide range of events and activities coordinated globally by Earthday.org for some one billion people in almost 200 countries world-wide. The 2024 theme aims to bring attention to the serious issue of plastic pollution and how it harms nature. Here on Saturday, April 20, 2024, City of St. John’s parks service worker Chris Hoddinott enjoys the sunshine and mild spring temperatures while he was weeding out and edging this flower bed following the past winter. An 11-year-employee with the capital city, Hoddinott was preparing this and other flower beds at Bannerman Park for the upcoming summer planting season of flowers and shrubs and other green foilage.
