A local swimming club is holding a reunion to celebrate its four-decades-long legacy in Truro.

The Truro Centurions Swim Club is celebrating its 40th year as a club by holding a reunion Saturday for former and current members to share stories and reminisce about the past four decades.

“It’s mostly a celebration of how we got to where we are,” said Troy Bond, who is organizing the reunion.

“It’s an opportunity for people to get up, speak and tell some stories about what swimming and the club meant to them. There is going to be a decade-by-decade breakdown of the last 40 years as well.”

The reunion will feature videos of past swim meets and events held by the club, old photos from over the years, and memorabilia on display.

“Weve got things like an old gym bag from back in the day, and there is an old eagle that was carved out for the club mascot we’ll display as well,” said Bond.

“Other people have been telling me they are bringing other things as well. Im sure some of the kids now will see these things and wonder how we managed to use them.”

To help share the history of the club, past members, coaches and even parents will speak, sharing their favourite moments and stories of the club with the crowd.

Were just trying to get different perspectives and angles for the last 40 years,” said Bond.

“We’re going to do a little Where are they now? segment, as we have a few members who have moved on to interesting things, including one who has gone on to coach at university level. We will also be doing trivia, and will have some food, wine and cheese and crackers from the RECC as well.”

The reunion will be held at the Rath-Eastlink Community Centre this Saturday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

“Ironically, that same day, we are holding our big swim day,” said Bond.

“People pledge money towards our swimmers, who then try to swim as much distance as they can in two hours. Its a big day for us, so it seemed right to just combine the two events, as everyone will already be here.”
