TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Lions took their spot on the big stage at the recent Legion youth national track and field championships in Sydney.
In total, 15 Lions competed at the event, including 10 who were members of the Nova Scotia/Nunavut team, and five others who attended as open athletes.
Noah Berniquer led the way by nabbing a silver medal in the U18 boys javelin. Berniquer’s 58.42m personal-best throw shattered his previous club record distance of 54.19m.
The boys U18 NS/NU 4x400m relay team, which included Truro runner Braden Gray, narrowly missed the podium, finishing with a time of 3:28.69 – just 0.27 seconds behind the bronze medal winning team.
Also attending the championships as officials were Truro volunteer club coaches John Nolan, Nathan Burris, Quinn and Mira Alexander, as well as coaches Tammy Armstrong and Dave Galloway. Quinn also organized more than 90 event volunteers who assisted in various capacities at the meet, on behalf of Athletics Nova Scotia.
The Lions were well represented and had the largest attendance from Nova Scotia clubs. Sydney will host the event again next summer.
