TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Freightliners will play for a Nova Scotia Tier 1 bantam football crown on Saturday.
The Freightliners will meet the undefeated Dartmouth Destroyers in the title game on the turf at Saint Mary’s University, with opening kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
“They’re having a lot of fun and they’re in it to win it,” Freightliners coach Brian Wood said of his group. “They’re going to Saint Mary’s to come back champions, no doubt about it.”
The Freightliners booked their spot in the provincial championship game last weekend after a thrilling 28-27 overtime victory over the Timberlea Titans under the lights at the TAAC Grounds.
Leading the charge for the Freightliners in that contest was quarterback and linebacker Matt Shannon. It was a gruelling back-and-forth match that saw the teams tied 21-21 at the end of regular play. Erik Hayden had two touchdowns for Truro, including one in overtime, while Cameron Hunt and Dante Gabrielli scored other majors.
On defense, super duo defensive ends Caleb Wolthers and Eli Dykeman kept the Titans run game in check.
“It was a hard-fought battle,” said Wood.
The Freightliners and Destroyers met once in the regular season with Dartmouth earning a 31-12 victory on Sept. 9 in the first game of the season for both teams.
“We’re a different team than we were in the first game; I’m sure they’ve gotten better too, but it’s a game we can win,” said Wood.
