TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Bearcats were successful in taking their 2018-19 home opener as they downed the visiting Valley Wildcats 3-1 at the Rath-Eastlink Community Centre Saturday.

The Bearcats record is now two straight wins in the Maritime Junior Hockey League, as they downed St. Stephen last weekend to open the season.

The Bearcats led 2-0 after the opening frame Saturday. After a scoreless second, the Wildcats made it 2-1 at 6:17 of the third when Bible Hill's Riley MacInnis chipped the puck out of his own end, raced to gather it up inside the Truro blueline before beating Alec MacDoanld with a low shot to the stick side for a shorthanded marker.

But a powerplay goal, Truro’s second of the night, by Karter Renouf at 11:38 sealed it for the Bearcats.

Curtis Heffernan and Shaun Bily had first-period goals for Truro, while Lauchie MacDonald, G Blackmore, Bily, Gavin Hart, Jack McGovern and Carson Lanceleve all chipped in with assists.

MacDonald stopped 30 of 31 shots directed his way, while at the other end, Liam MacDonald faced 28 Truro shots.

This Wednesday, the Bearcats host the Amherst Ramblers for a 7 p.m. game at the RECC. Thursday, they travel to New Glasgow to take on the Pictou County Weeks Crushers at 7 p.m. and Saturday they head to Yarmouth for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
