TATAMAGOUCHE, N.S. – The Tatamagouche Titans bantam C hockey team won the Wayne Waugh memorial tournament in dramatic fashion.
The Titans edged the Westville Miners 3-2 in overtime in the championship game to claim the banner for the first time in 13 years.
In the final, the Titans trailed 2-1 late in the game when Cody MacKay found the back of the net to tie it. In overtime, Kaiden Johnson potted the tournament-winning goal at 2:25, on a pass from MacKay, to give the host team the title. Johnson had the other goal for the Titans in the second period.
Tatamagouche posted a 1-1-1 record in preliminary action and earned a berth in the final based on goals for and against.
In Game 1, the Titans routed the Glace Bay Miners 10-4. Caden Laurie scored four times, while MacKay notched a hat trick. Lyle White fired home a pair and Johnson added a single marker. Assists went to MacKay, with three, Johnson, Evan Langille, Brenna Lepper-Belliveau, Maddy Lepper, Chase Tarrie, Emery Sinclair and Olivia MacLean.
In their second contest, the Titans ran into penalty trouble and suffered a 5-4 loss to the Miners. Johnson, with two, MacKay, and Sinclair scored for Tatamagouche, while assists went to Sinclair and Olivia MacLean, with two each, and Tattrie.
In a 2-2 tie with Stellarton, White and Johnson netted goals, while Laurie had two assists.
The Titans are a group of 19 players (10 boys, nine girls) of all different skill levels, four of which are playing hockey for the first time this season.
