SYDNEY, N.S. — The falling snow and cool temperature made it a perfect day for football.
The 21-0 scoreline in favour of the home side made it a great day for Wildcats football.
And the great thing is they get to do it again this coming weekend.
On Saturday, the Sydney Academy Wildcats shut down the Sackville Kingfishers in their Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation (NSSAF) provincial tier 2 semifinal football match at Sydney’s Open Hearth Park field.
The victory earned the Wildcats the right to host the championship final in Sydney next weekend at a time to be determined.
Sydney took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a 40-yard rouge by punter Diego Kuri before Wildcats quarterback Mason Mills found slotback Corey Petrie for a 17-yard touchdown pass. The Academy led 8-0 at the half.
The teams battled through a tough third quarter with neither side able to score any points. However, the Wildcats took control of the contest in the fourth quarter as Mills connected with receiver Dawson MacNeil for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Sydney Academy pivot was not finished and completed the game’s scoring on a touchdown run from the one-yard line.
The Wildcats, who went 5-2 in the regular season in an unbalanced schedule against both tier one and tier two teams, will take on Wolfville’s Horton High Griffins in the championship game.
Sydney defeated the Valley school 21-7 in Week 5 of the regular season.
