Rhinos split opening day at Maritime Hockey North championships

CHARLOTTETOWN - The MU Rhino Renovations Rhinos opened the Maritime Hockey North Junior C championships with a win and a loss on Thursday.

The Rhinos came out strong against the Southside Lynx in the first game, winning 5-1. Aaron Crocker, the team's leading scorer in the regular season, led the way with a goal and two assists, while Dylan Currie, Kenny MacInnes and Brendan Turner each had a goal and one assist.

Alex Place opened the scoring for the Rhinos at the end of the first period. The two teams played to a scoreless second before the Rhinos capitalized on powerplay chances in the third, scoring four straight goals.

Matt Caron turned aside 38 of 39 shots in the win.

The Rhinos finished off the day with a game against the Western Valley Panthers of New Brunswick, which they lost 5-3. As of press time, stats were not available.

The Truro club will be back in action Friday morning with a game against the Baffin Blizzard (1-1) at 11 a.m. and a date with the Sherwood Falcons (0-2) at 5 p.m.
