The latest addition to the St. John’s Edge playing roster is former University of Cincinnati guard Cane Broome.
Broome, who turns 25 next month, averaged 8.3 points for the Bearcats last season, and 7.9 in Cinci in 2017-18. He was named the team’s Sixth Man of the Year both seasons.
He went unselected in the 2019 NBA Draft.
The 6-0 Broome hails from East Hartford, Conn., close to Edge coach Steve Marcus’s hometown of Springfield, Mass. Marcus, who is returning to the National Basketball League of Canada team for his first full season as head coach, is said to be familiar with Broome from his time in New England.
Prior to going to Cincinnati, Broome played two years at NCAA DII Sacred Heart University, in Fairfield, Conn, where he was a Northeast Conference player of the year, all-rookie team member and first-team all-star.
Broome is the third player signed by St. John’s for the upcoming season, joining returning Canadians Junior Cadougan and Murphy Burnatowski.
The Edge open their 2019-20 season Dec. 27 in Moncton, N.B., against the defending champion Magic in the first of six straight games away from Mile One Centre.
Moncton had swept St. John’s in last season’s league final.
The Edge’s home-opener is Jan. 7 when they play host to the KW Titans.
