TRURO, N.S. – Owen Mullen saved his best for last.

The juvenile-aged golfer from Truro turned in a brilliant 36-hole score of 9-under-par 135 (66-69) to capture the final event of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour Atlantic Canada series at Fox Harb’r Resort in Wallace.

Mullen, 16, made a tournament-high 13 birdies and an eagle to finish with the low score of the championship. He played the front nine at even-par on both days before tearing apart the back side, shooting 30 on the first day and 33 during Round 2.

“My driving was pretty good all tournament,” said Mullen, who finished second at this year’s Nova Scotia junior championship and T41 at the national tournament. “Everything just seemed to click and I was just trying to make as many birdies as possible.”

Dartmouth’s Jake Smith finished runner-up in the juvenile division (73-76-149).

Owen’s younger brother, Simon, won the bantam division after rounds of 80-75 for a 155. Simon trailed by five strokes after the first round, but rallied for a two-stroke victory over Jacob LeBlanc of Dieppe, N.B.

“I was just thinking about making pars down the stretch,” said Simon.

Meanwhile, Truro’s Zachary Gaudet continued his fine play this summer by winning the peewee division (81-78-159) in convincing fashion.

“My iron play was the strongest part of my game,” said Gaudet, 12, who also won the Nova Scotia peewee crown this summer at Truro Golf Club.
