Sven Stammberger will follow his sister and play pro basketball in Germany.

The former standout forward with the Dalhousie Tigers, where he won three Atlantic university titles, has signed with the Tubingen Tigers, a pro A club in the university town of Tubingen, about 30 kilometres south of Stuttgart.

Stammberger, a U Sports academic all-Canadian who graduated from Dal in 2017, spent this past year studying in Denmark.

“I’m very excited,” said Stammberger, who was born in Bonn, Germany, before moving to Halifax in 2003. “I don’t know much about the league or team, to be honest. When I was a child, I watched the Bundesliga; my hometown had a first division team. I know a few players who have gone over there to play. So I can use those as a comparative tool.”

Training camp will be held in August. The regular season starts in September and playoffs begin in April.

Next fall, Tessa Stammberger will enter her third season with TK Hannover, which plays in the Bundesliga first division. A six-hour train ride separates the two.

Their mother Anna Stammberger, the Dal women’s hoops head coach, spent several years playing professionally in Germany.
