It was a day to forget for Brad Gushue and the rest of Team North America at the World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling in Las Vegas.

On opening day of play at the event, which pits top teams from Canada and the United States (Team North America) against those from Europe, the latter (Team World) won all nine of its games, six in mixed doubles and three in women's regular team events.

In mixed doubles play, Gushue and Lisa Weagle were defeated 10-7 by Ester Neuenschwander and Peter de Cruz of Switzerland.

The game saw the Swiss take a 7-3 lead through four ends, but the two Canadians clawed back to tie the game 7-7 heading into the eighth and final end. There, Neuenschwander made a difficult raise takeout with her final rock for the win.

All four members of Gushue’s two-time defending Brier champions were involved in mixed doubles Thursday.

Gushue, Mark Nichols (who partnered with Jennifer Jones Thursday); Brett Gallant (Jocelyn Peterman) and Geoff Walker (Kaitlyn Lawes) reunite for regular team play tonight when they face Bruce Mouat’s Scottish rink.
