TRURO, N.S. – Team Kaitlyn Jones got off to a fast start at the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Canadian Beef Masters event on Tuesday.
The Nova Scotia foursome surprised Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 7-4 in the opening draw at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.
Team Jones, which is playing on a sponsor’s exemption, also includes third Lauren Lenentine and Colchester County cousins Karlee Burgess, at second, and Lindsey Burgess, at lead.
After blanking the first end, Jones jumped out to a healthy lead by scoring four in the second. Tirinzoni, however, responded by scoring three times in the third. The teams exchanged singles in the fourth and fifth, while Jones added one in the sixth and stole one in the seventh for the margin of victory.
Jones returns to action on Wednesday against Kerri Einarson in the 7:30 p.m. draw.
Also on Tuesday, Ottawa’s Rachel Homan downed Tracy Fleury of Winnipeg 6-2, while Satsuki Fujisawa of Japan topped Jamie Sinclair of the U.S. 8-3. Homan won the Masters the last time Truro hosted in 2015.
On the men’s side, Jamie Murphy of Halifax upset Glenn Howard of Ontario 6-2. Like Jones, Murphy is playing on a sponsor’s exemption. Also on Tuesday, John Shuster of the U.S. edged Regina’s Matt Dunstone 8-7.
