Japanese point guard Syota Tsuyama is the latest signing for the Halifax Hurricanes.

The National Basketball League of Canada team introduced the five-foot-11 newcomer on Thursday. After representing Japan at the 2014 Asian Under-18 Championship, Tsuyama spent the past four seasons in the Japanese B League.

He was with the Ryukyu Golden Kings for his first three seasons before moving to the Fukuoka Rizing last year. He averaged seven points and three assistsin 2018-19.

"Syota is a rising star as a basketball player,” Hurricanes head coach Mike Leslie said in a news release. “He has played professional basketball since he was 18, has learned how to become a true professional player, and now wants to take his game to a higher level.

"As a dedicated and focused athlete, Syota wants to grow his game and compete in our league, using it as a stepping stone to elevate his pro career. He is excited to come to Canada and we are very pleased to welcome him to Halifax and the Hurricanes."

The Hurricanes open the 2019-20 season on the road against the Island Storm on Dec. 28, followed by their home opener the next afternoon against the St. John's Edge.
