TRURO, N.S. – Due to the pending storm approaching the Maritimes, the Maritime Junior Hockey League pre-season game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7 at the RECC between the host Truro Bearcats and Pictou County Crushers has been cancelled.

The game would have wrapped up the exhibition schedule for the Bearcats. Truro went undefeated in three games in the pre-season.

Hurricane Dorian will bring high winds and heavy rain to the region on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Bearcats and Crushers met in Pictou County, where Truro jumped out to a 4-0 first-period lead and hung for a 5-4 win.

Curtis Heffernan, Ben Higgins, Bryan Laureigh and Spencer Blackwell scored goals in the first period for the Bearcats on Thursday. Higgins and Laureigh struck on the power play.

The Crushers got on the board early in the second with a power-play goal by Alexis Quane-Arsenault, however, G Blackmore replied for the visitors at 7:45 of the period. Jaden Mason scored with six minutes left in the middle stanza to make it a 5-2 game.

In the third, Maxime Grandmaison and Evan Gallant – on the power play – found the back of the net for the Crushers.

Bearcats goaltender Alec MacDonald made 18 saves, while his teammates fired 28 shots at Andrew MacLeod and Matthew Normore.

Blackmore and Laureigh each finished the game with a goal and two assists.

Both teams went 2-for-4 on the power play.
