CORNWALL, P.E.I. —

Cornwall native Jordan Spence’s immediate impact on the Moncton Wildcats was recognized Wednesday night in Quebec City.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League named the 18-year-old defenceman its rookie of the year after he amassed 49 points, including 43 assists, in 68 games.
He is a graduate of the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride major midget and Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals junior A programs.
Spence made the all-rookie team along with Charlottetown Islanders blue-liner Lukas Cormier. The forwards were Victoriaville teammates Egor Serdyuk and Mihail Abramov as well as Chicoutimi’s Hendrix Lapierre. Victoriaville’s Fabio Iacobo was the goalie.
Summerside’s Noah Dobson made the first all-star team. He was joined on the blue-line by Rimouski’s Charle-Edouard D’Astous while his Rouyn-Noranda teammate Samuel Harvey was the goalie. The forwards were Rimouski’s Alexis Lafreniere, who was named the league MVP, Drummondville’s Joe Veleno and Rouyn-Noranda’s Peter Abbandonato.
The second team was comprised of Victoriaville goalie Tristan Cote-Cazenave, Drummondville defenceman Nicolas Beaudin, Baie-Comeau forward Ivan Chekhovich and Rimouski’s Jimmy Huntington. Halifax teammates Jared McIsaac, a defenceman, and Samuel Asselin, a forward, rounded out the squad.
Rouyn-Noranda’s Mario Pouliot, who guided the Acadie-Bathurst Titan to last year’s Memorial Cup, was named the league’s coach of the year. Islanders bench boss Jim Hulton was a finalist for the award.
