Cougars repeat as Northumberland region hockey champs

TRURO, N.S. – For the second straight year, the Cobequid Cougars are Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Northumberland region hockey champions.

The Cougars defeated the Northumberland Nighthawks 5-3 on Friday in Westville to sweep the best-of-three final series 2-0.

With the win, CEC advanced to provincials, which will be played March 8 to 10 in Cape Breton, hosted by the Glace Bay Panthers.

Calum MacLeod scored two goals, including the game winner on Friday, while Liam Atwater, Keegan Grady and Brayden Gray potted single markers. Cam Degroot, Jackson Haight, Rylan McIntyre, Joe Fagioli, Gray and MacLeod had assists.

Cody Patriquin earned the win between the pipes.

The Cougars open provincial tournament play on Friday at 8:45 a.m. against Sir John A Macdonald, followed by a 2:30 p.m. tilt against Auburn Drive. On Saturday, CEC plays Riverview at 10:50 a.m. Semifinals are slated for Saturday at 6 and 8 p.m. and the final will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
