TRURO, N.S. – The Yarmouth Mariners scored three second-period goals and skated to a 3-0 victory over the Truro Bearcats on Friday in a Maritime Junior Hockey League game at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.

The Mariners peppered Bearcats goaltender Myles Hector with 38 shots, including 16 in the middle stanza for a much-deserved road win in front of a crowd of 662.

After a scoreless first period, Brett Crossley put the Mariners on the board by converting a rebound past Hektor from the slot. At 7:43, Connor Peverill chipped one in from the side of the net, while at 13:26 Logan Timmons made it 3-0 by cashing in a rebound off a Sam Gillis shot.

The Bearcats had a chance to get back in the game early in the third with a two-man power-play advantage for almost two minutes, however, they failed to generate much in terms of scoring chances.

Mariners goaltender Tyler Caseley made 23 saves for the shutout.

Prior to the game, the Bearcats honoured longtime trainer Steve Lindsay for his 1,000th game with the team.

The Mariners are the league’s top team and have 17 wins in 21 games this season.

The Bearcats, who sit in third place in the Eastlink South Division with 26 points, return to the ice on Thursday when they visit the Pictou County Weeks Crushers. Their next home game is Dec. 2 against the Miramichi Timberwolves at 2 p.m.

Three other scheduled games on Frday were postponed due to weather.
