TRURO, N.S. – Longtime Truro Bearcats John Chapman and Jeff Chisholm are competing at the Canadian senior men’s baseball championship this week.
The players are members of the Sydney Sooners (Nova Scotia 2), who are playing at the Aug. 22 to 25 in Miramichi, N.B. Mike Tobin, a Truro resident who spent time with the Bearcats, is also a member of the Sooners.
Chapman and Tobin each collected a pair of hits and Chisholm singled and walked for the Sooners on Thursday in their 6-2 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador.
Chapman and Chisholm played senior ball in Truro for many years until the team folded this season. They joined the Sooners in mid-July.
The Sooners were not expected to play in the tournament after losing to the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry in last year’s Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League final.
However, in March, Baseball Canada approached the Sooners about the possibility of playing in the tournament as a second Nova Scotia representative after a team dropped out and Sydney accepted the berth.
The Moosehead Dry meet Ontario in their opening game on Thursday afternoon.
