Cougars hammer Cavaliers on Eastlink

TRURO, N.S.– The Cobequid Cougars enjoyed the bright lights and big stage on Monday.

The Cougars returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and rolled to a 39-9 win over the Cole Harbour Cavaliers in a Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation High School Football League matchup.

The game was played at the new all-weather field in Cole Harbour and was televised by Eastlink.

Kamryn Matheson returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a major score to set an early tone. Matheson, a running back, racked up 148 yards on nine carries in the game.

Ryan Power added two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown, and added a two-point convert catch.

Riley Gabriel had a 45-yard punt return for a TD and threw a pass for a two-point covert, while Andrew Floyd had a 70-yard TD catch and run.

Quarterback Mike Adams was 5-for-7 passing for 108 yards and two touchdowns. He also booted a 26-yard field goal.

CEC led 39-0 at halftime.

Dylan Benoit led the Cougars defensively with 4.5 tackles and one sack, while Daniel MacKay had 3.5 tackles. Mackie Hart had a sack, Ivan Gault forced a fumble and Cameron MacDonald made an interception.

The Cougars (1-1) return to action Sunday when they host the Auburn Drive Eagles (2-0) for a 1 p.m. opening kickoff at James Macpherson Stadium.
