P.E.I.’s Tyler Smith rink got off to a winning start in the 2019 New Holland Canadian junior curling championships on Saturday night.
Smith, third stone Ryan Abraham, second stone Alex MacFadyen and lead Ryan Lowery outlasted Quebec 9-7. The Robbie Doherty-coached Smith rink, which is based out of the Charlottetown Curling Complex, scored two in the first end and three in the fourth en route to building a 7-2 advantage after five ends.
Smith, who is making his fifth appearance at Canadian under-21 championship, and his teammates were scheduled to play Northern Ontario and Manitoba on Sunday.
In women’s play, skip Lauren Ferguson, third stone Katie Shaw, second stone Alexis Burris and lead Lexie Murray of the Cornwall Curling Club dropped their first two games Saturday – 9-5 to New Brunswick and 9-4 to Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Ferguson rink, coached by David Murphy, had two games scheduled for Sunday – against Quebec and Saskatchewan.
