Colchester County’s Griffon, Evans win tournament title

TRURO, N.S. – Local players Baillie Griffon and Willa Evans helped the Fundy Highland Subway Selects capture gold in the bantam AAA division at the recent 13th annual Sweetheart female hockey tournament on P.E.I.

Griffon, of East Mountain, had a goal and an assist to key an opening-game 3-0 victory over Central Storm, P.E.I., while Truro’s Evans scored the lone goal in a 1-0 semifinal victory over Western Wind, P.E.I.

In the championship game, Olivia Fitt scored the shootout winning goal, as the Selects edged the Moncton Rockets 2-1. Mairead MacPherson scored the lone goal for the Selects in regulation time on the power play.
The Selects swept through the round-robin with a perfect 3-0 record.

In the Game 1 win, Julia MacDonald and Maddie Beson also scored for the Selects in the shutout victory over the Storm.

Fitt scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Mid Isle Wildcats, P.E.I., with Evans and Beson providing assists.
In their final preliminary game, the Selects got goals from Beson and Jaylen Langille in a 2-1 win over the Wind. Megan Smith had an assist.

Goaltender Gabby Arsenault recorded all five wins and Fitt was named tournament MVP.
