TRURO, N.S.– The Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars built up a big lead in the opening half, and then had to fend off a late surge by the Halifax West Warriors Sunday in NSSAF football action at James MacPherson Stadium.

The Cougard prevailed in the wide-open contest, 44-26.

CEC scored late in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter they went ahead 23-7 before closing out the half with a TD on the final play before the break, and going ahead 30-7.

It was 37-13 heading in to the final quarter but the scrappy Warriors wouldn’t roll over. They made it interesting, coming to within 11 points at 37-26, aided by an interception returned for a touchdown and another major scored after recovering a CEC fumble.

The Cougars set matters straight, scoring a TD with about a minute to go, and then picked off a desperation pass by the Warriors with second to go to seal the win.

This Saturday, the Cougars are slate to take on the Prince Andrew Panthers in a 6 p.m. game in Burnside.

Sunday, Oct. 7 the Cougars will entertain the CP Allen Cheetahs in a 1 p.m. matchup.
