PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Team Canada wrapped up preliminary play with a 10-0 whitewash of Hong Kong at the world junior men’s softball championship on Thursday.
With the win, Canada (5-0) finished first in Group B and has earned a double life in the playoff round. The Canadians will cross over to play Australia in their first playoff game on Friday.
On Thursday, Canada scored three runs in the first, added four in the third and three in the fourth in the game that was called after four due to the mercy rule.
Mac Fischer was a key player on both sides of the ball for Canada. As the winning pitcher, he fired a one-hitter and had eight strike outs. At the plate, he belted a home run, triple and drove in two runs.
Brookfield shortstop Rowan Sears had the day off on Thursday, as did pitcher David Watson, of Milford.
Other playoff matchups on Friday include Japan vs. New Zealand; Argentina vs. the United States and Mexico vs. the Czech Republic.
Indian Brook’s Nathan Landry is a pitcher for the U.S. Earlier in the tournament, he threw a one-hit shutout against Guatemala.
Landry, Sears and Watson are teammates with the Colchester Royals U-19 team.
