Bearcats upend Kentville in NSSBL semifinal opener; Dartmouth takes lead

TRURO – The Truro Bearcats showed no signs of a three-week lay-off slowing them down as they edged the visiting Kentville Wildcats 4-3 in 10 innings at the TAAC Grounds Friday night.

The win gives the fourth-seeded Bearcats a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five semifinal series against the regular season champion Wildcats.

In the other semifinal, Dartmouth Moosehead Dry took both ends of a double-header Saturday in Dartmouth to go up 2-0. The Dry won the opener 5-4 and finished the day with a 17-2 drubbing of the Sooners.

the Wildcats and Bearcats go back at it in Game 2, Sunday at 7 p.m. in Kentville. The other series resumes Saturday in Sydney.

The Wildcats scored in the first inning Friday night and upped the count to 2-0 in their half of the fourth before Truro scored in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1.

The Bearcats gave up another run in the sixth but put across two of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie it again at three. That’s the way it stayed until Truro pushed across the winner in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Dan Bates earned the win on the mound for Truro, coming in late after John Chapman started. Shawn Tomlinson took the loss for Kentville after relieving starter Alex Ostrov.

At the plate, regular season batting champion Darson Murphy and Guy Pellerine each had a double and a single for Truro. Dan Bates had a double and knocked in two runs and Matt Mingo had a pair of singles.

For Kentville Colby Turple belted a home run and added two singles while Joey Cavadini chipped in with two doubles.

After Sunday’s contest, Game 3 is also slated for Kentville, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
