Bearcats erupt offensively in win over Wildcats

TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Bearcats split a doubleheader with the Kentville Wildcats in the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League on Sunday.

The Bearcats trounced the Wildcats 10-1 in the opener, but fell 7-3 in Game 2.

In Game 1, the Bearcats had the bats going, as they belted out 18 hits in the contest. Veteran Darson Murphy led the way with two doubles, three singles and three runs scored, while Dan Bates doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs. John Chapman added a double and two singles and Jeff Chisholm and Matt Mingo each had two hits.

Chapman pitched the win and Bates took over in the eighth. The duo combined to allow just five hits.

The Bearcats built a 6-1 lead after three innings and never looked back.

In Game 2, the Wildcats snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the seventh inning.

Murphy continued to swing the hot stick for Truro. He delivered two singles, scored twice and drove in two runs, while Chisholm singled, worked two walks, had an RBI and stole two bases.

Truro managed just five hits off winning pitcher Bradley Fuller and reliever Codey Shrider, who came on in the eighth for the save. Jason Smith suffered the loss.

The Bearcats (3-15) and Wildcats (5-13) meet again on Friday in Truro for a 7:30 p.m. start at the TAAC Grounds.
