McCULLY, Vernon Archibald – 84, Great Village, passed away at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with his family at his side. Vernon was born in Debert, on Friday, October 13, 1933, and was a son of the late Lloyd and Bessie (Archibald) McCully. Vernon thoroughly enjoyed life, had a quick wit and the love of a great story. He took pride in his children and grandchildren, encouraging them to follow their dreams and do whatever made them happy. Having a passion for life, finding fun in all he did, Vernon will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Vernon graduated from the Maritime Forest Ranger School in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1955. He enjoyed going to work every single day and continued his life-long love of nature by working for Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forest for the next 36 years in numerous roles including Supervisor of Forest Resources for the county of Lunenburg, Manager of Forest Resources for Colchester and Cumberland county, Supervisor of Forest Resources for the District of Colchester, and Supervisor of the Hunter Safety program for the province of Nova Scotia. After retirement, Vernon was very active in his many hobbies (farming, blueberries, bees, horses, giant pumpkins, hunting) and spent great energy within the community and with numerous organizations throughout the province. Vernon was a faithful attendee of St. James United Church, Great Village, where he took an active role in many church activities. He leaves behind his wife and best friend, Carrie (McDorman) McCully of 57 years; his children, Kevin (Joanne) McCully, Kathy (Malcolm) Irvine, Jonathan (Susan Cho) McCully, Brent (Suzanne) McCully, Rachel (Tim) Legge; grandchildren, Anna, Kara, Luke, Madeline, Alex, Eli, Roland, Curtis, Meghan, Maria, Ethan, and Duncan; brother, Ralph (Dorinda) McCully; sisters, Elaine (Doug) Hodges, Ardith MacPherson, Kathleen Martin, Lorna Fisher; brother-in-law, Gordon (Ruby) McDorman; many nieces, nephews and Archibald cousins. Along with his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his siblings, Glenn McCully, Joe McCully, Dorothy Price, Chester McCully, Eva Staples; granddaughter, Emily Irvine. Family and friends are welcome to a celebration of Vernon’s life. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m., today, Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Debert United Church, 1237 Plains Road, Debert, and where the funeral service will also be held 2 p.m., Thursday, January 25, 2018, Reverend Dan Gunn officiating. Reception will follow. Spring interment in Mahon Cemetery, Great Village. In lieu of flowers, please perform a random act of kindness (like Vernon would do) or provide a donation to the St. James Church of Great Village Preservation Society.
