Mary Irene Macdougall

Mary Irene Macdougall
MacDougall (Lawson), Mary Irene, Otterbrook, Colchester County, passed away June 1, 2019 at her home with her family by her side. She was the youngest daughter of the late Leonard and Peggy Lawson of Saint John, New Brunswick. She is survived by her husband John; children, Katie (Andrew) Snelgrove, Ian (Elizabeth) MacDougall, and Meg; grandchildren, Wesley and Harry Snelgrove, John, Lachlan, and Grace MacDougall. She is also survived by her brother, Jack Lawson (Jane) of Shediac; sister, Jane Lawson of Toronto. Mary distinguished herself in her commitment to her family and of selflessly tending to their needs. Mary graduated from UNB with Bachelor of Physical Education and Master of Education degrees. For many years, she taught school in Sackville, Truro and the Stewiacke Valley. She will be remembered by her former students as a kind and dedicated teacher who enjoyed participating with them in extracurricular activities. She had many close friends, and at risk of offending those not mentioned, she appreciated her time with Heather, Audrey, Elaine, Sharon, Debi, and Robyn. The friends she made through volleyball, horses, and other activities added to the joy she found in life. The simple things in life were important to her. She had great fun the last few years with her grandchildren. She was a keen walker/hiker and at times was preoccupied attending to the needs of her dogs, cats, horses, feathered friends, and wildlife in general. She was a recreational gardener taking pride in both her flower gardens and vegetable garden. She was an avid reader. She always looked for the bright side and generally found it with the aid of a wee drop of Dubonnet. The family would like to thank the many people who assisted in her unrelenting struggle with cancer. You are too numerous to mention individually. Old friends were supportive and new friends, especially in the health care professions, were interesting and open. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Colchester- East Hants Library Foundation or Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation, if so inclined. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 6th at 11am in Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince St., Truro with Father Cristinel Fartadi officiating. Reception will follow in Campbell Hall. Interment in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Robie St., Truro. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro where online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
