Florence Isabella Shearer (Blackmore)

Florence Isabella Shearer (Blackmore)
Florence Isabella (Blackmore) Shearer - 95, Belmont, passed away peacefully, with her loving family by her side, on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Florence was the daughter of the late Stearns and Esther (Tattrie) Blackmore of McCallum Settlement. Florence is survived by five of her ten children, Teddy (Marg), Roach (Leona), Russell (Donna), Eric (Donna), Terry Lynn (Kevin), all of Belmont; brother, Newton (Darlene) Hingley, Harmony. She was very loved and admired by her large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Shearer; sons, Curtis (Odessa, surviving), Elmer (Marg, surviving), George, Alexander, Perry; sisters, Blanche Messervey, Daisy MacLeod, Freda MacRae, Gladys MacKenzie, Addie Currie, Hazel Johnson; brothers, Murray Blackmore, Ernest Blackmore, Norman Hingley (Beverly, surviving), Edward in infancy. Florence left home at a very young age to go out and brave the big world where she worked for a short time at Lewis Hat Factory in Truro. She next married Alexander and spent the rest of her life dedicated to raising her family. She loved God. Florence spent many happy years with her boys and these are just a few of their wonderful memories - hanging out by the river bank, sometimes taking her laundry and washboard with her, gathering wood and wood chips to fire up their wood stove for her to make her famous home-made bread, carrying water from the brook for her to do laundry, picking wild strawberries in which she would serve them with milk and sugar as a treat. Her love of monkeys started when they had a pet monkey in Ontario. Florence spent sixteen years caring for her son, Alex and made some wonderful memories within the Belmont community. She had a great love for dancing and made some wonderful friends and spent hours quilting with her sister, Hazel. In later years she enjoyed traveling and camping with her special friend, Frank Duguay (deceased). Florence then had a void she needed to fill so she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law and continued with her well known nurturing ways in helping to raise her granddaughters, Jessica and Jocelyn, where she passed on her loving ways and words of wisdom. She worked as a private caregiver until she was no longer able to and spent the rest of her days with her daughter and family helping around their home with daily chores. There were many happy family gatherings around their dining room table. Florence had a lot of family and she encouraged everyone to call her Gram, related or not, and many did just that. She touched the lives of many and always had an open door to anyone in need. The family would like to express special thanks to the nursing staff on the Third Floor and Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre. As per her wishes, the family welcomes everyone to come and celebrate her life from 1-5 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Lower Onslow Community Centre, 12391 Highway 2, Lower Onslow. Graveside interment service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2019, at Blackmore Memorial Cemetery, Upper North River. If so desired, donations in Florence's memory to Victorian Order of Nurses or Blackmore Memorial Cemetery are welcomed.
