Carl Henry Hiltz
HILTZ, Carl Henry – 95, Truro, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018, at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Henry J. and Gertrude A. (Ferguson) Hiltz. Carl was a retired employee of CNR after 41 years of service. He was involved in the labour movement all his working life and was, for a time, the Agent of the local CBRT and GW Union. At an early age, he was enlisted as a “boy soldier” at one half pay with Colchester & Hants Regiment (M.G.) band and played at the funeral of the late Lt. Governor Frank Stanfield in 1931. He was a veteran of the Second World War with five and a half years of service and returned home on Queen Elizabeth troop ship that docked in New York. Mr. Hiltz was involved in music most of his life and played in local dance bands and in England; he volunteered his musical talents to many fund raising activities and participated in the early Nova Scotia Provincial Music Festivals under Sir Ernest MacMillan. He was involved in Air Cadets and the Boy Scout movement. For years, he was Chairman of the Board of Stewards and the Cemetery Committee of Hilden United Church. He was a member of Cornerstone Club at Truro Stadium and Emerson Club. After retirement from the railway, Carl became an accomplished woodworker and built quality hardwood furniture for 20 years. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Joyce Patricia; sister, Rose; brother, Allen; son-in-law, Richard Wenzel. He is survived by son, Rick (Bev); daughters, Carroll Fitzgerald, Donna Wenzel, Holly (Bruce) Peers, all of Nova Scotia; Gertrude Rose (Kim) Maxwell, Saskatchewan. He was a loving and generous Papa to twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Honouring Carl’s wishes, he has been cremated and there will not be any visitation or service. Interment will be held at a later date in Hilden Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Carl’s memory to a charity of choice are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
