MONCTON, N.B. – Two men from Riverview, N.B., have been arrested and are facing various charges after allegedly committing an attempted robbery and home invasion in Springhill and fleeing from police into New Brunswick.
Christopher Lee Glennie, 42, and 36-year-old Nathan Daniel O’Brien made a brief appearance in provincial court in Moncton on Wednesday and were remanded in custody until Friday when they’ll return for a bail hearing.
Both are facing 10 charges including possession of a stolen vehicle of a value more than $5,000, possessing stolen New Brunswick licence plates, failing to stop for police while being pursued, obstruction of justice and possessing two stolen machetes of a value not exceeding $5,000.
They also face charges of possessing a sawed-off 12-gauge Remington shotgun and a 12-gauge Maverick shotgun for a purpose dangerous to the public peace, unsafe handling of firearms, possessing restricted weapons without a licence, occupying a vehicle knowing there were restricted firearms inside and possession of prohibited firearms with available ammunition.
O'Brien is also charged with dangerous driving, failing to comply with a probation order and failing to comply with an undertaking.
They are also expected to face charges in Nova Scotia related to the attempted armed robbery.
Members of the Southeast District RCMP responded to a call for assistance from RCMP in Nova Scotia at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, asking to stop a vehicle travelling into New Brunswick on the Trans-Canada Highway.
The two men inside the vehicle were alleged to have committed an attempted robbery and home invasion in Springhill shortly before 5 p.m. and had fled from police.
“Springhill RCMP responded at 4:52 p.m. to a call indicating someone was trying to break into a home on Kennedy Street while the occupants were still inside,” Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, media relations officer with the Nova Scotia RCMP, told the Amherst News. “The resident of the home told the suspect she was calling the police and they left the area in a white minivan. She provided a description of the van to police, and they used that description to locate the vehicle a short time later.”
New Brunswick RCMP said in a news release that a spike belt was deployed along the highway near Exit 467 B, in Painsec, N.B. near Dieppe. The vehicle came to a stop near the next exit and the two suspects fled on foot. The New Brunswick RCMP's Police Dog Services were deployed and located the two men a short time later. They were arrested and taken to hospital for minor injuries. They were later released into police custody.
A member of the New Brunswick RCMP was also injured while responding to the call and was treated in hospital and later released.
The investigation is ongoing by both the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia RCMP.
