CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The RCMP’s investigation of charges of mischief and sexual touching against Allen Victor Jefferson of Stratford led to the discovery the accused had left P.E.I. and was later located in New Brunswick.

On Jan. 13, Jefferson was arrested and transported back to the Island where he was lodged at Sleepy Hollow Correctional Centre overnight.

On Jan. 14, he was taken to the Queens District detachment at Maypoint for fingerprinting on his way to a remand hearing.

During the time between the fingerprinting process and transition to the courthouse, Jefferson escaped lawful custody by bolting out the back door of the detachment.

Charlottetown Police Services, RCMP Police Services and RCMP officers searched the perimeter and located Jefferson in Cornwall at about 7 p.m. Monday.

He was remanded into custody and made a brief appearance in provincial court in Charlottetown Wednesday where he said he was planning on seeking representation from legal aid, but hadn’t been able to speak to anyone yet.

The Crown sought to have Jefferson remanded in custody until dealt with, but the court heard the accused may seek to have a show cause hearing at a later date to try and get his release.

Jefferson will be back in provincial court Jan. 21.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald also told the court further investigation is ongoing or needs to be done and the matter won’t be ready to be dealt with next week.
