RCMP arrested two men following an incident that resulted in traffic being rerouted this morning- Dec. 11.

At 4:05 a.m., a member of Kings District RCMP were conducting a traffic stop on Hwy. 101, on the Exit 15 on-ramp when a vehicle heading west was stopped for a Motor Vehicle Act offence. Interaction between the driver and the police officer involved the discharge of a firearm, after which the driver ran into a wooded area. The police officer, who was not hurt, called for back up.

A 20-year-old male passenger who remained in the vehicle was i arrested without incident while the Nova Scotia RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), RCMP Police Dog Services, and RCMP Air Services were called in to help search for the driver.

Vehicles travelling along Highway 101 were rerouted to Highway 1 near Coldbrook and, in a tweet early in the morning, RCMP said they were “on scene near distance marker 198 on Hwy 101 at an unfolding situation.”

The search resulted in a 26-year-old man being arrested. He had a non-life-threatening injury, and was taken to hospital for treatment. He was released from hospital later in the day, and is being held in custody.

The highway is expected to remain closed between Exits 15-16 for most of the day.

Somerset and District Elementary School was closed for the day.

The investigation continues, and the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is asking anyone who  witnessed the incident to contact them at 1-855-450-2010. SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia.
