AMHERST, N.S. — A man and woman from Prince Edward Island who allegedly had a loaded handgun in their car were arrested after Amherst RCMP stopped a vehicle in the town Thursday.

Police said in a news release that an officer was driving through a parking lot on Highway 6 shortly after 10 p.m. and saw a vehicle that seemed suspicious.  A man was seen near the vehicle trying to stay out of sight of the officer.

When the officer checked the licence plate, it didn't match the vehicle so he pulled the car over as it left the parking lot.

The driver didn't have a valid licence, and the handgun was subsequently found in the vehicle, according to police.

Steven Wallace Frizzell, 46, of Summerside and Trudy Lynn McKibbon, 32, of Kensington were arrested and both charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a firearm with the serial number removed and possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition.

Frizzell is also charged with possession of a firearm while prohibited. McKibbon is facing additional charges of identity fraud and carrying a concealed weapon.

Both appeared in Amherst provincial court Friday and were released on conditions. They are scheduled to return to court Nov. 18.
