TRURO, N.S. — Truro resident Anne Malick was recognized for her long-standing work with inmates at the Nova Institution for Women.

The Correctional Service of Canada said Malick won the 2019 James A. Murphy Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) Award of Excellence Jan. 20.

As a CAC member, Malick has taken part in numerous inmate committees and workshops at the Nova Institution for Women, helping inmates reintegrate into society. She has also helped recruit and mentor new CAC members, using her knowledge of the correctional system and communities in which prisons are located.

Before the Nova Institution for Women was established in Truro, Malick served as community chair of the steering committee that lobbied to have the facility built locally. She has been an advocate of public safety in Nova Scotia for nearly a quarter-century.

CAC groups working with inmates were first established in the 1960s and are now a key part of the prison system, according to the Correctional Service of Canada.
